The door bell rings. You, with your cup of morning coffee, open the door to a smiling salesman. He holds out a pack of coffee to you: "Good morning! You have used up your last spoonful of coffee this morning, so we thought of giving you a free sample of our new taste variant. We know you like your coffee with more milk, less sugar, and about a spoonfull for every cup. This taste variant will go very well with the low-fat milk you prefer, and also with extra-thick bread slices that your husband likes. It even complements the marmalade that you have on Sunday mornings. By the way, we also have a new orange preserve, with no added sugar. It is for diabetics, like your mother. Would you like to sample that too?"
Freaky?
It is increasingly dawning on me exactly how much of ourselves, our lives, and the lives of others around us, we are willing to sell for what's apparently 'free'.
"But I am not buying any of these things," you can say. And you are right. But if you are not buying, then you are the one being bought.
Are you game for that too?
